Smartwatches present an obvious risk because they can receive information from apps and chess engines. A player can receive messages or vibrations with hints about the next move. This creates uncertainty, and the ban makes tournaments easier to manage.

FIDE has introduced a regulation stating that a player loses the game if they carry electronic equipment during a round. This applies even when the equipment is not used. Several arbiters explain that the rule is necessary to avoid conflicts between players and tournament staff.

Hidden technology in mechanical watches

Analog watches are also covered by the ban. The reason is that even a classic wristwatch can hide electronic components. These can include microchips, transmitters or coded vibrations that are difficult to detect. Arbiters prefer a clear rule without exceptions, which creates predictability for all players.
